Scandlines is preparing the port of Puttgarden for an emission-free future

news-details

As part of its sustainability strategy, Scandlines has set itself the clear goal of converting the ferries on Vogelfluglinie to emission-free operation (zero direct emissions) by 2030. In order to implement this goal, another important milestone has now been reached.

Since the existing power grid in the Puttgarden ferry port does not provide the necessary capacity for the future needs of battery-electric ferry operations, a new 11 km long cable route has to be laid from the substation in Burg to the port. In addition, a 30 kV medium-voltage switchgear will also be built in Burg. The new "cable" to the ferry port will provide a total connection capacity of 15 MW.

The project is planned and implemented on behalf of Scandlines Deutschland GmbH by the regional network operator, Schleswig-Holstein Netz AG. A corresponding contract was recently concluded for this purpose. The construction work for the project will already start in the second half of the year – in the northern area of the route. Around 1.5 years are planned for the implementation of the entire work up to the provision of the connection.

Heiko Kähler, Managing Director of Scandlines Deutschland GmbH, is happy that this important step could be taken: "With this investment, we are making the port of Puttgarden fit for an emission-free future. Efficient infrastructure is the cornerstone of economically successful ferry operations. This not only applies to the roadside connection to the ferry port, but also to the power grid of the future as part of climate protection and the mobility revolution.”

“The energy transition can only succeed with a mobility transition. As the responsible network operator, who has already connected tens of thousands of wind power and photovoltaic systems to its electricity network for the energy transition, we are pleased that we will be able to provide Scandlines with the desired network capacity in the future and thus contribute to the decarbonisation of ferry traffic on the Vogelfluglinie," summarizes Mirko Sadowski , head of the technical location of SH Netz in Pönitz.
